Yaetris Toledo Madrigal, a woman from the central province of Sancti Spiritus, in Cuba, had been longing for a child when an ultrasound revealed she was expecting twins.

Unfortunately, having contracted the influenza A (H1N1) virus, doctors had to perform a premature caesarean during her 34th week of pregnancy.

Dr.Omar Rangel Armas, who is an Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist, recalls how Yaetris had to be admitted to the hospital during her 31st week of pregnancy because one of the foetuses was suffering from intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR); and how a few days later, she began to show other symptoms like nasal discharge, cough and aches all over her body.

"When the symptoms appeared, I had the influenza A (H1N1) test done. As it were positive I got terribly scared and my blood pressure rose; so I was transferred to the intensive care unit of the Camilo Cienfuegos local hospital." Yaetris told us while she breastfed her two babies Renata Maria and Pablo Enrique.

Dr. Armas explained that a multidisciplinary team including obstetricians, intensive care specialists and gynaecologists, had decided to perform an early caesarean on Yaetris during her 34th week of pregnancy, as she was having respiratory problems and high blood pressure.

After the surgery, both babies had low birth weight and presented a few respiratory symptoms; but today, they are safe along with their mother.
