“Now more than ever, we need a united and solidary Latin America, and in this sense Cuba has led by example,” said Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo upon his arrival Tuesday night to Havana.

“This is the objective of our current visit...to expand the ties of friendship and solidarity, and to thank this government and its people who have shown so much solidarity towards our country.”

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla welcomed Lugo with a warm hug as he got off the airplane. Paraguayan Ambassador to Cuba Luis Domingo Laíno was also at the airport to receive Fernando Lugo.

The former bishop and parish priest of the San Pedro community announced his resignation from his duties as a priest to run for president while he was last in Cuba, in May 2007, to participate in the Hemispheric Meeting to Fight against Free
