On January 23, 1869, Jose Marti published in La Patria Libre newspaper his poem Abdala, alluding indirectly to happenings here and the Cuban psyche.
La Patria Libre was directed by Marti and Fermin Valdes Dominguez, and edited in El Iris daily, when the island's independence hero hardly was 15 years old.
