Cuban Art Auction to Contribute to Recovery actor Jorge Perugorria announced the project
Actor Jorge Perugorria announced the project. He said paintings, engravings, drawings and photographs by Cuban artists will be offered on and online expo-sale as an art auction titled “Art for Art.” The project is supported by Cuban cultural institutions and especially the National Visual Arts Council, reported Granma newspaper.

In presenting the initiative, Perugorria said “Many of us want to and are willing to help our Cuban brothers and sisters in anyway possible; many other Cubans are already helping in different ways to alleviate the difficult situation of the population in the most affected areas.”

He added that the funds raised by the auction would go to “the restoration of cultural centers devastated by the storms, especially those related to the Poor Film Festival of Gibara, created by Humberto Solas, one of Cuba’s most important filmmakers.” Peruggorria noted that “the Gibara festival opened a new space for cinematography for young independent filmmakers of Latin America and the world and has converted the city of Gibara into one of the places dearest to filmmakers and artists.”

The people of Gibara, one of the places most damaged by Hurricane Ike, expressed their appreciation for the visit of artists Pancho Amat and his Cabilido del Son, Beatriz Marquez, Buena Fe, Corina Mestre and Osvaldo Doimeadios.

In related news, La Colmenita children’s theater troupe, divided into four groups, will perform in Viñales, Consolacion del Sur, San Cristobal, Bahia Honda, Los Palacios, Minas de Matahambre and Candelaria, all in the province of Pinar del Rio from September 20 and 21.
