It will be dedicated to authors Fina García-Marruz, winner of the National Literature Prize, and Jorge Ibarra, winner of the National Prize of Social Sciences. Also, it will be dedicated for the first time to a Cuban institution, Casa de Las Américas, for its 50th Anniversary and the guest of honor country will be the Republic of Chile.

Beside its usual premises in the San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress, last series of the International Book Fair held in February 2008 had the premises of the Pabellón Cuba, located on La Rampa in this capital, and the premises of Rancho Boyeros Fair. There were also four new institutions for the young and the 45 bookstores in the capital, which opened to the general public as early as February 6. Along with the usual Pavilion for Children “Tesoro de Papel” in La Cabaña, there were also two more premises on weekends, one of them located in the Pabellón Cuba and the other one in the Anfiteatro de La Habana Vieja. All of them had artistic and literary programs and sold books for children and young people.

The Fair was visited for more than 4 234 298 people, who bought around five million copies in the 42 venues all over the Island. In Havana, in the pavilions located in the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress, there were publishers, writers, book sellers and distributors from 32 countries; 82 Cuban publishing houses exhibited and sold their books, along with 235 foreign publishing companies. As part of the Fair’s artistic program, the people in the capital had the opportunity to enjoy 63 musical shows of different genres, 16 theater performances, 11 film screenings, 20 exhibitions and 14 dance shows. Also there were given 32 concertos by popular bands “Antes del Cañonazo” and different activities took place in factories, schools, cultural and recreational facilities in the capital and the provinces.

The International Book Fair Cuba 2008 showed why this event has become in the most popular one of the Cuban culture. More than a mere space to buy books and hold talks with writers, it has become a place to show the different aspects of the dynamic cultural life in the Island. Considered to be the main cultural event, the International Book Fair has become the most important occasion to the Cuban publishing movement since its first series in 1982. It provides a space for participation and exchange to all the entities related to the world of publishing, as well as for authors, editors, distributors, book sellers, printers, literary agents, multimedia producers, journalists and other professionals, so it will be the best place to meet the Cuban readers.

In the spirit of our motto and the hope that our events become a symbol a referent in the exhibition, marketing and exchange of the best Cuban, Latin-American and universal literature, we invite you to participate with us in this festival of literature and arts.
