Cuba participated for the first time in this important Contest in 1964, represented by ballerinas Mirta Plá and Josefina Méndez, who from that moment on appeared among the prizewinners.
The following year, 1965, Loipa Araujo won the Golden Medal in the competition, while distinguished figures of the National Ballet of Cuba have been jury members.
In this year’s Varna Festival there were 150 competitors from more than twenty countries of all continents.
The young couple of Cubans, Dariela, aged 18, and Osiel, 17, gave performances at the Palace of Culture and Sports of the beautiful coastal city of Varna, the talent handed down by the masters of the Cuban School of Ballet to their disciples.
