An exhibit titled Cuba and the Sea at the Havana based National Museum of Fine Arts
At a press conference here in Havana, curator Olga López explained that the aim is to show how the different generations of Cuban artists have reflected the sea in their works.

Presented with great success in Greece last April, the exhibit includes works from the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts - some of them unpublished - by artists like Aurelio Medero, Mariano Rodríguez, Esteban Chartrand, Sanz Carta and Fidelio Ponce.

The Havana Bay and other sea areas are featured in the exhibit that will remain open to the public until October 20th to mark the 7th anniversary of the museum’s re-opening.

The exhibit ‘Cartografías de una isla de Ultramar’ will be inaugurated in July. It comprises 22 sculptures paintings centered on two different periods: the Colonial era and the 1980s and 90s.

The works are by European artists and Cuban painters, among them Alexis Leyva (Kcho), Antonio Eligio Fernández (Tonel), René Francisco and Sandra Ramos.

Also on occasion of a new anniversary of the museum’s re-opening, to be marked on July 18th, visitors will have free access to the exhibition halls for two days.

Activities will also include a season of Japanese films with six films, including Kid return by Takeshi Kitano and others by Yojiro Takida. A summer workshop titled ‘El museo, la isla y algo más…’ (The Museum, the Island and Something more…) will pay homage to Rumanian painter Sandú Darié, (image) (1906-1991) on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
