New Permanent Commission for Economic Affairs of the National Assembly of People's Power is Set up
According to Granma daily, the meeting was presided over by Ricardo Alarcón de Quesada, Jaime Crombet Hernández-Baquero and Miriam Brito Sarroca, president, vice president and secretary of the Cuban Parliament, respectively.

The new parliamentary commission is made up of 30 deputies, most of them elected for the first time for the current 7th Legislature.

While presenting the commission members, Miriam Brito explained that the director of the World Economy Studies Center, Osvaldo Martínez Martínez, was ratified as president.

A member of the National Secretariat of the Confederation of Cuban Workers, Luis M. Castañedo Smith, and Vice President of the Provincial Administration Council in Havana City, Liliana Ezquerra Carripio, were selected as vice president and secretary, respectively.

In his opening speech of the session, Alarcon insisted on perfecting the smooth running of parliamentary commissions, at a time when the Second Secretary of the Party, Army General Raul Castro has called for the strengthening of the country's institutionalization.

"We should legislate and control more and achieve a greater popular participation, with a more systematic work of the commissions," said the president of the Cuban Parliament.

In this regard, he said the Commission for Economic Affairs should play quite an active role in the discussion of the plan and budget with workers, as well as in the periodic control of their carrying out in the provincial and municipal assemblies of People's Power.
