Cuban International Master (IM) Fidel Corrales won the Open Chess Tournament of La Roda in the Spanish
Cuban International Master (IM) Fidel Corrales won on Sunday the Open Chess Tournament of La Roda in the Spanish city of San Sebastian and in the process also took his third Grand Master (GM) norm.

Corrales finished the event with 7.5 points of nine possible along with Colombian GM Alexis Cabrera and Armenian GM Karem Movsziszian but he won the title in the tiebreak.

According to the website of the event, Corrales concluded the competition undefeated with six wins in his first six matches and three ties in the last three games, including one against Movsziszian.

With this result, Corrales also won his third and last GM norm and added 17.1 units to his current ELO rating of 2509 points.

Another Cuban player, IM Luis Manuel Perez, placed sixth with 6.5 units after he won four matches and tied five. One of his victories was against Iberoamerican and Pan American champion GM Julio Granda of Peru.

The other Cuban player who participated in the event was GM Omar Almeida, who placed ninth also with 6.5 units after he won five games, tied three and lost one.
