The President of the European Society of Biomaterials, said Cuba has a great potential in the field of biomaterials
The President of the European Society of Biomaterials, Charles James Kirkpatrick, said Cuba has a great potential in the field of biomaterials with a large number of young and highly professional specialists.

Kirkpatrick, who is also director of the Pathology Institute of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, made the comment after giving a lecture at the University of Havana at the Third Meeting on Clinical Applications of Biomaterials.

The professor praised the scientific level of the presentations made by Cuban experts at the event, showing a notable expansion in the scope of research, he said. He also spoke in favor of establishing permanent ties of collaboration with Cuban institutions.

According to the most accepted definition, biomaterials are modified synthetic or natural materials used for contact or interaction with the biological system of the human organism. They are widely used in dentistry, plastic surgery, orthopedics and traumatology.

On a worldwide scale, the industry generates more than 25 billon dollars, and most part of the material is produced in wealthy countries, which in turn consume 90 percent of available products on the international market.

At the opening of the Meeting on Clinical Applications of Biomaterials, Ruben Alvarez Brito, director of the University of Havana's biomaterials center (BIOMAT), said biomaterials are on the road to becoming another pillar of Cuban science as a result of scientific work and the experience accumulated in the field.

Also present at the opening of the conference were Concepcion Campa Huergo, director of the Finlay Institute; Ruben Zardoya, president of the University of Havana; Rodrigo Alvarez Cambras, director of the Frank Pais International Orthopedic Complex; and Luis Prado, representing UNESCO.
