Due to health reasons, and the treatment he should undergo, actor Sergio Corrieri has requested to be freed from his responsibilities as president of the working group in charge of the organization of the congress, to be held in April next, explains the note released in Havana on last January 24th.

Wed like to thank Sergio for his active, serene and lucid presence during the initial stage of our work, and we hope he recovers from his current situation¨, reads the letter.

The coming weeks, before the celebration of the Congress, will entail a number of tasks that should be accomplished, adds the note, including the provincial meetings and national associations' meetings.

To lead such a complex process, says the message, writer Miguel Barnet - who was acting as Senior Vice President - will take on the Presidency, and sculptor José Villa will assume the Senior Vice Presidency.

The UNEAC's note calls on the co-operation from the members of the Organizing Commission, from the Presidents of the National Associations and from the executives of the provincial subsidiaries.

Barnet is one the most published Cuban writers in Cuba and abroad, and his testimony novel Biography of a runaway has probably been the most translated and published Cuban novel abroad.

Sergio Corrieri is a famous Cuban theatre, cinema and television actor. He starred in the Islands most celebrated film: Memories of underdevelopment. Corrieri has not acted for several decades now, and hes been working as a political leader in the cultural and international affairs sectors. He is the current president of the Cuban Institute of the Friendship with Peoples.

Last year, the renowned actor was called to preside the organizing commission of the congress of Cuban artists and writers, but according to the note he had to request to be freed from the post due to health reasons.

The UNEAC is made up of several thousands of writers and artists from all the areas of the cultural creation. It was founded in 1961 and its first president was poet Nicolás Guillén, who died more than two decades ago.

The next congress is expected to include discussions on important issues of the Cuban cultural life, the working methods and and the developing possibilities of artists and writers, among other highly topical subjects.
