Argentinian writers Samantha Schweblin and Laura Yasan won on Thursday the Casa de las Americas Award in the categories of Short Story and Poetry, respectively, during the awards ceremony of this annual contest promoted by the Havana-based Casa de las Americas cultural center.

Puerto Rican Luis Lopez Nievez, a member of the jury, praised Schweblins originality and mastery of the techniques of the genre. "There was no room for debate," he said.

For his part, Jorge Fornet, director of the Center for Literary Research at Casa de las Americas, said that Argentina is an important point of reference in the continent regarding literature, and recalled that writers from this South American nation have always had an outstanding participation in the annual event.

Meanwhile, Cuban Nelson Simon received the First Mention in Poetry while also Cuban Alexis Diaz Pimienta received a similar award in the same category.

In the category of Caribbean Literature, the top award was for Haitian Louis-Philippe Dalembert, while Carlos Walter Porto-Goncalvez won the prize in the category of Brazilian Literature.

In other results, Colombian Hugo Nino won in Social Historic Essay.

Speaking to reporters, Jorge Fornet said that this contest is also an important space for cultural dialogue as it facilitates the exchange with prestigious writers and personalities of the region such as Chilean poet Gonzalo Rojas and Mexican painter Jose Luis Cuevas.
