The conference, which was part of activities to mark the 155 th
birthday of Cuban National Hero Jose Marti, drew 500 delegates
from 35 countries worldwide.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Cuban poet Roberto Fernandez
Retamar, President of the Casa de la Americas , praised
contributions by Jose Marti and Venezuela s National Hero Simon
Bolivar to the world struggles for justice in the 19 th century.
General Secretary of the Organisation of Spanish and Portuguese
speaking Countries Alvaro Machesi acknowledged Cubas efforts in
educating, spreading and preserving Jose Martis heritage.
