The Cuban
Literacy campaigns in Latin American countries such as Bolivia, Honduras, Guatemala and Venezuela using the Cuban Yo si puedo (Yes I can) teaching method is the subject of a new documentary produced by the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC).

The documentary, titled La dimension de las palabras (The dimension of words) premiered last Friday January 25th at 8:30 p.m. at Havanas Charles Chaplin Theater preceded by a photo exposition of each story. Afterwards, the film will be screened at theaters throughout the country.

The full length production includes five different stories intertwined by the conflicts of people learning to read and write in the 21st century, seen from the perspectives of five young filmmakers: Carlos Machado, Aram Vidal, Alina Rodriguez, Benny Ray and Daniel Vera. The producer was Carlos de la Huerta.

"Our goal was to blend the reality of women and men of very diverse ages who begin to better themselves amid the limitations of their daily realities," said Alina Rodriguez.

Belkis Vega, advisor to the documentary, said the work is a tribute to the Cuban Literacy Campaign and that the sensitivity achieved was done with limited technical resources.
