Even Fontaine Ortiz was elected president of the Common Dependency of Inspection (CDI) of the UN System, the highest post for a Cuban official, it was reported Wednesday.

The CDI, made up of 11 inspectors appointed by the UN General Assembly, is the only independent body of external supervision with the most extensive powers and mandate that cover all UN system's organizations.

To elect these posts the organization takes into consideration experiences and skills in areas of administration, supervision and control, as well as the knowledge of the entire UN system.

The CDI carries out functions to control and supervise inspections and investigations in different organizations and administration services.

Fontaine Ortiz has held high and important posts at the UN, and was member of the Consultative Commission on Administrative and Budget Affairs from 1984 to 1994, and appointed by the UN secretary general as Executive Secretary of the CDI, a function he exercised until 2002.

On that date, the UN General Assembly chose him as one of the CDI inspectors for a five-year period, a mandate renewed by the top entity during the current session.

Among posts were president of the Fifth UN General Assembly Commission on administrative and budget affairs in 1986.
