Cuba begins commemorating the International Day to Stop Violence against Women with an action program aimed at fighting the injustice.

Sonia Beretervide, president of the National Group for Domestic Violence Against Women, said the drive will span nation wide until December 10.

The also member of the Federation of Cuban Women said the goal is to rise general awareness, prevent violence and help build a better society amid growing world disrespect for human dignity.

Women in Cuba are 65.2 percent its technicians and professionals and 35.96 percent of legislators.

The UN approved in 1999 November 25 as International Day to honor Dominican Republic Mirabal sisters, murdered by the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in 1960.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called violence against women one of the most abhorrent, systematic and extended human rights violation.

In his message on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls, Ki-moon urged to lift the curtain of tolerance shielding such aggressions that leave an annual toll of 5,000 fatalities.

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) defines violence against women as the worst of human rights violations, whether domestic, in trafficking or as systematic victims at areas in conflict.
