The Cuban Council of State announced today that next January 20, 2008, elections will take place for delegates to the Provincial Assemblies of People's Power and deputies to Parliament on January 20, 2008.

The announcement, signed by First Vice President Raúl Castro Ruz and disseminated through national television news programs, states that this is the second stage of the general elections completing the process begun last July 9.

"It is hereby established that elections will take place next January 20 for the Republics voters to elect delegates to the Provincial Assemblies and deputies to the National Assembly for a five-year term," the official communication stated.

The announcement came four days after the convening of the Municipal Assemblies and closes the first phase of the electoral process in which more than 96% of the Cuban electorate participated.
