Cuban Yargelis Savigne, Among the Leading Latinos in Track and Field
The other one is Brazilian triple jumper Jadel Gregorio Cubas Yargelis Savigne and Brazilian Jadel Gregorio, both triple jumpers, were the only two Latin American athletes leading the 2007 world ranking in their event, as was announced by the IAAF.

Guantanamo-born Savigne jumped 15.28 meters at the World Championship in Osaka, Japan; while Gregorio hit 19.90 meters in Belem, Brazil.

Meanwhile, Cuban Dayron Robles, who will turn 21 on November 19, was second in the 110 meters with hurdles with 12.92 seconds - the same time as Chinas Liu Xiang. Nonetheless, Xiang ended in first position because he won the World Championship of Osaka, where the Cuban ended fourth.

Another who also has had an excellent year was Panamanian Irving Saladino, the world champion in the long jump with 8.57 meters, although he finished second after Greek Louis Tsatoumas, who jumped 8.66 meters in June.

Dominican Felix Sanchez was third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 48.01 seconds, after coming back to the track and overcoming old and new injuries.

Other Latin Americans also made it to the top ten. In the men rankings there were three Cubans: Víctor Moya (ninth in the high jump with 2.33 meters), Osniel Tosca (fifth in the triple jump with 17.52 meters) and Guillermo Martínez (seventh in the javelin with a throw of 85.93 meters). The list is completed by Brazilians Marilson dos Santos (tenth in the half marathon) and Thiago Jacinto Dias (tenth in the long jump with 8.26 meters), and Mexican Giovanni Lanaro (tenth in pole vault with 5.82 meters).

In the 4x100 meter relay, Brazil ended fourth with 37.99 seconds.

In the womens rankings another three Cubans made it to the top ten: Yania Ferrales (eighth in the discus throwing with 64.97 meters), Yipsi Moreno (fourth in hammer throwing with 76.36 meters) and Sonia Bisset (fith in the javelin throw with 64.65). Likewise, the Cuban team came in ninth in the 4x400 meters relay at 3:27.04 minutes.

Mexicos Ana Guevara (tenth in 400 meters at 50.16 seconds) and Brazilians Fabiana Murer (ninth in pole vault with 4.65 meters) and Maurren Higa Maggi (fifth in long jump with 6.95 meters), and the Mexican team in the 4x400 meter relay (tenth with 3:27.14 minutes), completed the list of Latin Americans in track and field world rankings.
