Garcia Marquez calls for release of the Cuban Five

Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, 1982 Nobel Prize for literature, has added his voice to the demand for the immediate release from US prisons of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters who have been held as political prisoners in the United States for more than nine years.

There are now six Nobel laureates who have added their name to the October 12 call issued by the In Defense of Humanity Network, reported Prensa Latina.

The document demands liberation for Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, who were given long and unjust sentences after a biased trial, fraught with irregularities, held in Miami.

The other Nobel laureates who have singed the document are East Timorese President Jose Manuel Ramos Horta and Adolfo Perez Esquivel (Peace), Nadine Gordimer and Wole Soyinka (Literature), and Zhores Alfiorov (Physics).

The call, signed by some 3,300 individuals, and international organizations and institutions, has generated a huge wave of support, especially in the United States, Spain, Argentina, France and Latin America.
