Cuban meteorological radar station to increase services in the Caribbean

The meteorological radar station of Punta del Este, located in the south-eastern coast of this Cuban territory, is to extend its services toward the Caribbean area.

Yusimí Figueredo, member of the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA), told Prensa Latina news agency that the location of the new calculation devices in this radar station would allow increasing the available information for time forecast in the region.

She added that this acquisition comes on top of the radar automation carried out in 2002 and strengthens the early warning system in the face of dangerous natural events like severe local storms, besides monitoring tropical hurricanes.

Punta del Estes registered-information is supplied to the Cuban Meteorological Institute (IMC), which in turn makes it available to the Caribbean countries and Internet users.

The current remodelling of this radar station includes a full reparation and the relocation of the electrogenous groups that guarantee the uninterrupted surveillance of the area under the coverage of the radar station and improves the life conditions of its workers in this inhospitable place.

The meteorological radar station of Punta del Este, located some 62 kilometers from Nueva Gerona, capital of the Isle of Youth, is one of the eight existing in the country and operates 24 hours a day.
