"Support from Cuban specialists and the island's government for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is impressive," said Kemal Dervis, the organization's administrator who is heading a delegation on a two-day visit to this capital.

Dervis, a Turkish economist, said Cuba plays a decisive role in this part of the world in its development assistance in such important areas as education, health, science and sports.

"I come to learn from the Cubans and perhaps contribute something from our experiences," said Dervis.

"I am aware of the problems that the Cuban economy faces, the situation of the embargo [US blockade of the island]. We highly value the efforts of the country and the changes made to continue developing in key areas," he added.

The UN official noted that Cuba is very active in the United Nations, "This is why the discussions we will hold to learn the island's proposals and to plan future work are very important."

The UNDP group is scheduled to meet with Cuba's Minister of Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration, Marta Lomas, and other Cuban officials, reports Granma newspaper.

After their stop in the island, Dervis and his delegation are headed for the Central American nations of Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador.
