Theater National Prize laureates
Maestro, playwright and Papalote theatre director René Fernández is the first National Theatre Prize winning-puppet and children script writer. Good news because it was time enough that sector of the Cuban scenic arts received the attention of a non-Havana-based creator.

Historia de burro, Los ibeyis y el diablo, Okin, and Feo among others are several of the memorable pieces written and directed by René, which are part of the repertoire of European and Latin American theatre troupes.

René de la Cruz, actor of the unforgettable character Julio el pescador received the National Theatre Award 2007 together with María Elena Molinet, Eduardo Arrocha and René Fernández, also known for his televised work that won the National TV Prize last year and his acclaimed theatre performances. All started in 1957 working with prestigious theater directors Eduardo Manet, Ugo Ulive, Nelson Dorr and Gilda Hernández. Not to forget his work with Roberto Blanco in Los enamorados, Goldoni's classic piece he staged side-by-side his son Renecito in1986 in Teatro Mella.

Also memorable is his dramatic contribution to the play Andoba by Abraham Rodríguez directed by Mario Balmaseda with Teatro Político Bertolt Brecht that René himself directed for some years. René de la Cruz, 75, admired by theatre and TV viewers for the deep psychological light he throws into his characterizations heartens the popular sensibility as a close friend.
