The Philippines, according to Philippine Amateur Baseball Association president Hector Navasero, earned the invitation on the strength of its maintaining, for years, its lofty ranking in Asia.

Also invited are Olympic and World Baseball Classic champion Japan, perennial world champion Cuba, Italy and Holland, representing Europe, Australia of Oceania, and Korea, another world-contender.

The Philippines invitation was relayed by Chris Day of the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association, second in command of International Baseball Association acting president Tom Peng.

"It is an honor to be invited to this prestigious tournament," Navasero told Tempo.

Navasero, meanwhile, be-wailed plans to discard the participation of baseball and other team sports in the Asiad this coming Dec. 1-15 in Doha because of the reported lack of space in the Athletes' Village.

"Why can't they think of a solution to the problem. Canceling the participation of such and such sports each time problems crop up demoralizes not only the athletes but also those from other sports," he said.

Saying he is also speaking for softball and water polo, sports threatened of non-inclusion for lack of funds despite making the criteria set by the Philippine Olympic Committee, the baseball head urged sport leaders to find ways to house athletes instead of scrapping their participation outright.

"As I have been saying, we owe it to our athletes to send them to Doha if they qualify. Isang taon nang naghahanda ang ating mga atleta.

Sinusuwelduhan ng PSC at ginagastahan sa kanilang training. Tapos hindi mo isasama dahil lamang sa problemang puwede naming remedyuhan," he rued.

"I said this and I'm saying this again. Wala raw pera para sa baseball, so kahit na magsanla ako ng lupa, ipadadala ko ang baseball. Wala daw matitirahan, well, I am willing to pitch tent sa mga beaches sa Doha para may matulugan ang mga players ko!"
