A man has been charged for allegedly stealing a private airplane from a Florida Keys airport and flying it to Cuba with his young son as a passenger.

Randall Franklin is charged with interstate transportation of stolen property for allegedly taking off in someone else's plane from the Marathon airport early Saturday morning.

Later that same morning, Cuban authorities notified the US Interests Section in Havana that a plane matching that description had landed in Cuba.

The FBI says there is no other information available about Franklin or the boy, such as their hometowns or whether they were visitors in the Keys. The boy's mother lives in Mexico, and investigators are checking to see if the Cuba trip arose from a parental custody dispute.

Federal authorities say Franklin and the boy are both staying at a hotel in Cuba. It's not clear when or if they will be brought back to the US. It also is not clear when the plane might be returned to its owner.
