Nanotechnology is at the center of 21st Century Chemistry, said Chemistry Nobel Prize Laureate Harry Kroto at the 27th Latin American Chemistry Congress, which kicked off Tuesday in Havana.

Kroto, who is a professor at the State University of Florida, gave a key lecture on
"Architecture in Nanometric Dimensions".

Nanotechnology is a discipline that studies the manipulation of material at microscopic scale, and which brings together sciences like Biology, Physics and Engineering.

Other participants at the international event include Peter Atkins, from the University of Oxford and Ann Nalley, president of the American Chemistry Society.

More than 800 experts from 55 nations are attending the congress, which has been organized by the Cuban Chemistry Society and the Latin American Federation of Chemistry Associations, PL News Agency reported.

The 27th Latin American Chemistry Congress, which will wind up October 20, also includes workshops, symposiums and poster presentations on Chemistry teaching, natural products, the environment, biochemistry, molecular biology, biomaterials and industrial chemistry.
