Cuba has 340 companies which are certified or employ guaranteed quality standards; 44 percent of these firms are based in Havana.

Agustin Irulegui, an official with the Cuban National Standardization Office (ONN) told the press that the number of companies using quality standards is bound to increase. He said standardization is an action which enhances visibility, stability, and boosts the economy of any nation. Steps in that direction also validate the socialist management model.

Irulegui said that with the participation of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, some 125 entities will be certified with the NC-18001 Cuban standards, which are relevant to the nations labor security and health system.

He announced that preparations are underway to hold a sixth international forum, "Quality 2006," scheduled to take place from November 28-30 in Havana. The event is expected to be attended by some 500 national and international experts in the field, he said.

The forum will focus on overall management and quality, security systems, labor security and health, tourism, and environmental management.
