Cuba's Economy Minister José Luis Rodríguez said on Friday in Havana that the island's economy grew 12.5 percent in 2006. During the report on the island's economic results during 2006 at the plenary session of the Cuban Parliament, Rodríguez added that the growth figure is the highest in the history of the Cuban Revolution and in Latin America during this past year.

Rodríguez told members of the Parliament and delegates at the session: "Today we can tell our dear Fidel, to continue setting the guidelines for the well being of the population. We will be ready to carry out your orders and guarantee your work towards victory."

Two days of meetings of the 10 permanent parliamentary committees preceded today's session. Members of the Economic Affairs Committee met Thursday with Yadira García, the minister of Basic Industry, who told the legislators that the vast majority of Cuban families receiving new home appliances are making their payments on schedule.

García said that the distribution of millions of new energy-saving appliances has ensured that there was no significant overall increase in energy consumption this past year. The goal of the nationwide program is to replace old energy-guzzling refrigerators, stoves and cookers with new efficient ones, reducing the country's energy consumption and lowering the amount of foreign exchange used for importing fuel.
