Nuevitas new pipeline
Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage attended the inauguration on Wednesday of a 24 km water pipeline that will supply the 45,000 residents of Nuevitas, an industrial city in the province of Camaguey, with a safe and secure water source.

The new pipeline runs from the California reservoir to Nuevitas and will be used both for domestic and industrial supply, Granma daily reported.

Abundant rainfall this year has helped increase reservoir supplies in this drought-prone region of the country, but levels are still below the national average.

Nuevitas was one of the worst hit municipalities by the prolonged drought of the last few years. A significant investment was required to install and put into operation the new California to Nuevitas pipeline.

The state-of-the-art pumping station is fully equipped with fast-acting electric control valves, automatic three way suction systems, purge valves and checkpoints that make possible to totally drain the 24 kilometers long pipeline in less than two hours.

Vice President Lage also visited the Las Flores farm of the Camalote Agricultural Facility which houses one of the largest numbers of full and semi-protected shade houses for specialized crops.

Lage, together with Julio Cesar Garcia, the First Secretary of the Communist Party in Camaguey, spoke with the farm workers about a number of work related topics.
