After two weeks of a successful tour that took them to London, Cairo and Alexandria (Egypt), Alicia Alonso and the Cuban National Ballet have just arrived in Spain, reported Granma newspaper on Friday.

Not just autumn, which began yesterday, welcomed the distinguished and awaited visitors, but a great number of journalists from the most varied of Spanish media. The journalists all gathered in the Albeniz Theatre for the press conference prior to the performances of the Cuban company.

Happy and emotional, the Prima Ballerina Assoluta and director of the company said that even though they visit Spain, which is like her own home, every year, it seemed to her that she had been absent for a long time. "We have made so many tours to different countries; we have worked so hard carrying our art, with all the friendship, peace and culture it involves all over the world; that we have had no time to think about the time that has passed.

Alicia talked about the three programs they will perform on the stage of the renowned Madrid theatre, until October 8: Swan's Lake, "something that cannot be missed because it is a charming and longed for classic": Giselle, "a play whose story is each time clearer in our version." As they say in Spain, it is very important to the Cuban National Ballet due to the intimate relationship between it and Alicia for decades, which placed her name at the highest level. As the last program, the audience of the Spanish capital will enjoy the choreographic gala Alicia Alonso with a program made up of fragments from the pieces Umbral (threshold), Shakespeare y sus mascaras (Shakespeare and his masks), Verbum and La flauta mágica (the magic flute).

As well, every night the audience will enjoy several classic pas de deux, all of them choreographic versions created by Alicia Alonso.

As a note of interest, this Friday the exhibition Cuadros de una exposicion (paintings of an exposition) will be opened in the central Annta Gallery. This exhibition shows paintings by twelve Cuban artists, who have dedicated their paintings and designs to the ballet of the same name which Alicia Alonso will present in the 20th International Ballet Festival in Havana. The exhibition is being held in conjunction with La Acacia Gallery and the Espacios Gallery also in Madrid.
