The Cuban films will be presented throughout January in a tribute to the Rebel Army led by Fidel Castro that toppled the Batista dictatorship on January 1, 1959.

The premiere of Blockade: The War Against Cuba, by Argentine director Daniel Desloms, gives viewers a look at the history and consequences of the US blockade imposed nearly a half-century ago on the island.

Among the films to be shown are: Lucia (1968) and Un hombre de exito (1985) from director Humberto Solas; and Hasta cierto punto (1984), La muerte de un burocrata (1966), Memorias del subdesarrollo (1968), Los sobrevivientes (1979), La ultima cena (1977), Las doce sillas (1962), Cumbite (1964) and Una pelea cubana contra los demonios (1972) from director Tomas Gutierrez Alea.

Documentaries by Santiago Alvarez and the film Aventuras de Juan Quin Quin (1967) and El megano (1955) both by Julio Garcia Espinosa will also be shown.

Hombres de mal tiempo (1968) by Alejandro Saderman, Se permuta (1983) by Juan Carlos Tabio and La bella del Alambra (1989) by Enrique Pineda Barnet are also on the program.

Fifty animated shorts slated to be shown include several by Juan Padron, creator of the cartoon personality Elpidio Valdes, who battles against the Spanish colonial forces.
