Cuba Baseball

Cuba and Holland clash on the first day of the 16th Intercontinental Baseball Cup, which runs from Nov. 9 to Nov. 19 in Taichung of Chinese Taipei, the Cuban Baseball Federation said on Monday.

Cuba is seeking its 10th Cup, and the Federation has shortlisted 30 baseball players for training, of whom 24 will travel to Taichung, a city 138 km southwest of Taipei.

Rey Vicente Angalada who is training the team, said it will include three players for home base, six in-fielders and four or five out-fielders, as well as 10 pitchers. At least three of the 10 pitchers will be left-handed.

Of all the shortlisted players, Pedro Luis Lazo has represented his nation most often: in three international games. Eduardo Paret and Michel Enriquez have both represented their nation twice.

Twenty-two of the 30 shortlisted players (or 73 percent) were part of the Cuban team at the Baseball World Classic, where they won silver to Japan's gold.

All of the shortlisted players were part of the gold-medal-winning team at the 20th Central American and Caribbean Games that took place in the Colombian city of Cartagena de las Indias.
