The discovery dates back to the second half of the XIX century, when local slaves bathed themselves in the hot springs to cure their wounds and to relieve physical pain. It is said that they were surprised because of the rapid healing.

About six months ago, Villa San Jose del Lago in the Cuban central province of Sancti Spiritus, was turned into a sort of health hotel providing thermal water treatments.

Dr. Julio Mirabal Ortiz, specialist on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and head of the medical services in the health resort told Escambray about the remarkable improvement of most of the treated patients, some of which have recovered far beyond expectations.

Patients are evaluated by a team of experts who decide which of the 18 therapeutic techniques will be applied to each of them. Ambulatory treatment is also possible.
