The programme of recuperation of devices and equipment that are heavy consumers of electricity will produce more than 100,000 tonnes of steel for the national iron and steel industry.

This will represent a considerable saving in imports, affirmed Marisela Álvarez, Director of the Union of Raw Material Recuperation Companies(UERMP in Spanish), reported Friday Granma newspaper.

A great volume of scrap has been obtained from these items of, in the main, domestic equipment. The process of the replacement by items which are energy-economic which is expected to continue until the end of 2007, includes fans, refrigerators, TVs, air-conditioning units, water pumps (so far in the provinces of Pinar del Río, Matanzas and Cienfuegos) and car parts.

"The processing of these", she pointed out, "has allowed us to obtain significant quantities of scrap - steel, electronics, aluminium, copper, plastic, glass and wood."

The scrap is destined for national industry: to produce steel bars in Antillana de Acero y Laminador de Las Tunas; electric conductors in ELEKA; kitchen utensils in aluminium foundries; and to make plastic tubes, shoe soles and other products in local industries.

In order to carry out this task, Alvarez sressed, it was neccessary to increase by more than 1,500 the workforce of UERMP, prepare the condition as process bases, 24 installations belonging to other entities, contract a workforce to strengthen security and the protection of existing resourses, and guarantee protection equipment and work tools for the workers that manage the scrap.
