Liquid natural gas is key to Cuba’s energy plans

Natural Gas (methane) is one of the world’s most plentiful, cleanest, safest, and most useful of all energy sources; and Cuba is about to increase its role as part of the country’s future energy mix. Cuba produces today approximately 1.155 million m³ of associated natural gas per year, an increase of 55 percent from 2005 levels of .743 million m³. Cuba’s natural gas production is all associated natural gas found within the crude oil reservoirs. The island’s geology to date has not proven to be a major source of dry, non associated natural gas reservoirs. Read More

But when visa delays thwarted the Africans’ travel plans, Mr. Gold and his producer, Ry Cooder, improvised by inviting some Havana old-timers into a studio there and voilà. The resulting “Buena Vista” album, recorded in 1996 and released a year later — a slow, romantic stroll through the sounds of prerevolutionary Cuba — sold eight million copies, won a Grammy and spawned more than a dozen solo albums. Chucho Valdes takes stage at Warner Theatre

The result is a collection of eight remarkable numbers encompassing jazz, bop, swing and Afro-Cuban ritual music. The title alludes to the mathematical scheme of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” answered by Valdes in parallel improvisations and variations. The winner of seven Grammy Awards and too many honors to cite, this Cuban national treasure and his extraordinary group will perform all eight original compositions at Warner Theatre as part of his first U.S. tour in seven years.
