The achievements of Cuban biotechnology, particularly the Havana-based Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center, have helped diagnose, prevent and treat 26 diseases.  
The Center is currently developing over 50 different projects, including human and veterinary vaccines, recombinant proteins, monoclonal antibodies, diagnostic systems and techniques for aquiculture and vegetable biotechnology.  
The achievements of the scientific center have had strong impact on human health, agriculture and the environment.  
Particularly, some 49 thousand patients have been benefitted with the pharmaceutical known as Heberprot-P, used in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers to prevent amputation of lower limbs. This product is being administered to over 180 thousand patients in other countries.  
Other important products include those to treat chronic Hepatitis B, acute hemorrhages, pregnancy tests currently being distributed in the Cuban drugstore network.  
Meanwhile, the Biotechnology Center has reached commercialization accords for its vaccine against cattle ticks, which has already been used in Panama, Nicaragua, Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela.
