“The Cuban embargo needs to go once and for all,” Hillary Clinton said on Friday in a live televised address to Florida International University in Miami. While she didn’t mention them by name, Clinton used her speech to criticize Republican primary candidates. Florida Senator Marco Rubio supports the continuation of the embargo. So does former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
The Democratic candidate came to Florida International University to reaffirm her public stance on Cuba: the "engagement", the "closeness" is better political tool than confrontation.
“We must decide between engagement and embargo—between embracing fresh thinking and returning to Cold War deadlock,” said Clinton, who also added that closer ties across Latin America will help our economy at home, and strengthen our influence around the world.
"Cubans want a closer relationship with the United States. They want to buy our products, read our books, browse our website and learn from our people. They want to bring home the XXI century. That is the way to democracy and dignity and we should walk with them. "
Ending the embargo is not just a presidential issue. It will take an act of congress to end it. There are two bills currently proposed, one in the House and one in the Senate.
