Germany expects the closing of the US base in Guantanamo soon
The German government expects the closure of the US internment camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, said a spokesman after the visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs to Cuba.
"The German government agrees with the president of the United States" that the camp must be closed, said today Martin Schäfer, the spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry.
Guantanamo "has been used by the United States in a way that serves neither Cuban nor us," the spokesman Steinmeier highlighted during the traditional press conference of Mondays.
The spokesman also referred to the request for return of Guantanamo submitted by Cuba. "The Guantanamo issue plays an important role in almost every conversation that remains in Cuba with people interested in politics (...) because it is a part of the island, the Cuban state territory, which is not under Cuban sovereignty".
