US denies visa to head of Cuban athletics to visit Puerto Rico
The president of the Cuban Athletics Federation, Alberto Juantorena, did not receive the visa granted by the State Department of the United States and may not visit Puerto Rico next week, where he was invited to participate in the activities of the Athletics Ponce Grand Prix.
"We did not expect this. We think that with the recent announcements (thawing of relations between the governments of the United States and Cuba) it could be possible. He was supposed to come on Wednesday with the rest of the delegation”, said Jose Enrique Costas Loyola, executive director of the event.
David Bernier, Puerto Rico Secretary of State, confirmed that Costas told him about the situation and asked for his intervention to change the decision. The official said that he will talk with the US Department of State, although he did not offer much hope of success.
