Cubans are in marriages and consensual unions in similar proportions, according to marital status statistics published today from the 2012 population and housing census.

Those figures accounted for 9,676,129 people aged 12 and over, of the island's 11,167,325 inhabitants.

Studies found that 2,623,409 people were common-law partners, similar to the number of married people.

In the eastern provinces, the proportion of married citizens united was lower.

Of 2,922,881 single Cubans, only 561.462 claimed to have put a legal end to their last marriage, while 229,776 declared themselves as separated.

According to the national director of the Census, Juan Carlos Alfonso, most previously married men described themselves as single instead of divorced, while the majority of divorced women described themselves as such.
