The Cuban Cultural Goods Fund in central Cienfuegos province expects to export nearly 1500 guayabera shirts, Cuban National Garment, to the Caribbean market, said the director of the institution in the city of Cienfuegos

In statements to PL news agency, Ericel Alvarez said that his institution has the only textile factory producing only guayabera shirts on the island. The origin of the garment dates back to the early 18th century in nearby Sancti Spiritus province.

Cienfuegos also harbors the Museum of the Guayabera Shirt, with a collection that includes some donated by personalities, such as Fidel Castro, Raul Castro, Hugo Chavez, Nobel Literature Prize Guatemalan writer Miguel Angel Asturias, among others.

Major demand for the product is particularly found in Panama, Colombia and Venezuela, said Alvarez who stressed the high quality of the fabric and components of the shirts being produced in Cienfuegos.
