Viengsay Valdes, prima ballerina of Cuba’s National Ballet Company (BNC) received standing ovations during her presentation in the 6th Benefit Gala of Dance Stars, held in the Dominican Republic over the weekend.

Along with Armenian Tigran Mikayelyan, leading dancer of the Munich Opera, the Cuban artist showed her excellent technique in “Aguas primaverales” first, with choreography by Asaf Messerer, and later in “Don Quixote,” an original by Marius Petipa, with music by Ludwing Minkus.

Dancers from another four countries offered their art in 11 presentations, among them the “Tchaikovsky pas de deux,” also praised by the public, with the interpretations of Argentinean Paloma Herrera (American Ballet Theatre) and US dancer Amar Ramasar (New York City Ballet).

A special moment of the gala was the farewell as dancer of Portuguese Bevindo Fonseca, who, at 48 and after a hard four-year process of recovery due to surgery on his hip, performed “Renace” and “Makeba.”
