The works "El crimen fue en Granada" by Cuban choreographer and dancer Irene Rodriguez and "Hasta donde?" by Spanish-Israeli Sharon Fridman jointly won top honors in the 8th Alicia Alonso Iberoamerican Choreography Competition, known as CIC-2012, it was announced over the weekend in Havana.
The CIC is sponsored by the Author Foundation of Spain's General Society of Authors and Editors (SGAE) and the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC), and its honorary president is Cuban dancer and choreographer Alicia Alonso.
Competing for the prize this time around were 42 choreographic compositions from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Spain, Mexico and Venezuela.
The panel of judges was headed by BNC dancer Anett Delgado and unanimously awarded the prize, local media reported.
The judges emphasized the "original manner" of uniting flamenco, Spanish dance, contemporaneous dance and interpretation in "El crimen fue in Granada" as well as the "almost clockwork" precision at every step in recreating the spirit of the same-named poem by Antonio Machado about the death of Andalusian poet Federico Garcia Lorca.
In Fridman's choreography, the judges emphasized "the elasticity, harmony and fluidity in movement" and "an intense gesturing, based on the codes of contemporaneous dance."
The judging panel also awarded "Special Mentions" to "Lua" by Spaniard Mercedes Suarez and "Anoxia" by Cuba's Osnel Delgado.
The CIC-2012 Award will be presented during the 23rd International Ballet Festival in Havana, which will be held between Oct. 28 and Nov. 7, 2012.
