The Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) and the National Audiovisual Institute (INA) of France will sign in this capital a cultural cooperation agreement for the protection of the “Noticiero ICAIC Latinoamericano” (ICAIC Latin American Newsreel).

The president of the ICAIC, Omar Gonzalez, and Mathieu Gallet, director of the INA, will sign the agreement, with the purpose of restoring, digitalizing and appreciating the Newsreel’s collection, declared a National Heritage and registered in the “Memory of the World Register” of the UNESCO in 2009.

Roberto Smith, head of the ICAIC’s Cinematographic Information Center, told the press that this cooperation will make it possible to restore the 35 mm copies and digitalize them in High Definition format.

The agreement favors joint exploitation of materials digitalized with benefits for the two parties, although the ICAIC keeps its heritage rights and the ownership of the Newsreel’s original films.

Considered a unique collection of high historic, artistic and patrimonial value, the ICAIC Latin American Newsreel was directed by late Cuban documentary maker Santiago Alvarez and constitutes a cinematographic testimony of significant national and international events of the second half of the 20th century.

The collection is composed of 1,490 weekly broadcasts, produced and shown between June, 1960, and July, 1990.(ACN)
