According to Dr. Jose Manuel Ballester, director of the Institute of Hematology and Immunology (IHI) in Cuba more than 400 hemophiliacs receive priority attention as part of the program that exists on the island.
Ballester told AIN that the registry that is controlled in the IHI are included the total number of people suffering from this ailment, which are systematically monitored and are treated by multidisciplinary teams.
These include hematologists, geneticists, orthopedic, physiatrists, dentists, psychologists, educators and technical and nursing staff that offer comprehensive care to patients and family members said.
The referral program, which ranks the IHI takes actions to comply with the objectives of the national health system and direct care programs for individuals with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders throughout the island, stressed Dr. Ballester.
This has been set up specialized centers in Pinar del Rio and Villa Clara, in addition to that provided in all hematology services the Caribbean nation, said the doctor.
There is also a group of patients, families, health workers and volunteers, in order to improve the quality of life of patients.
An estimated one in every thousand people in the world has a bleeding disorder, however, 75 percent without treatment.
Each April 17 marks the World Day of Hemophilia and in Cuba the government invests substantial resources, both facilities from primary to tertiary level, which in this case is the IHI, national reference center.
The World Federation of Hemophilia turns 50 in 2013 and to greet the date activities are organized throughout the world, for which Cuba will be included by virtue of their social system that proclaims the Health for All, without social, economic, racial or religion, concluded the expert.
