28/09/2011. NEIVA (FIBA Americas Championship for Women) - Cuba are 2-1 and third in Group A but will leapfrog second-place Puerto Rico (2-2) with a victory over Chile on Wednesday. The Cubans defeated Puerto Rico 67-50 on the opening day of the tournament.

Argentina remained unbeaten on Tuesday at the FIBA Americas Championship for Women in Colombia with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Cuba.

Marina Cava poured in 16 of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as Argentina stunned the Cubans, 65-59.

Trailing 52-42 with 7:36 remaining after a basket by Cuba's Yamara Amargo, the 25-year-old Cava took over.

She had six points and Debora Gonzalez five in a 11-0 run as Argentina went in front.

Clenia Noblet stopped the rot with a lay-up to put Cuba back on top by a point, only for a Carolina Sanchez bucket to give Argentina the lead again.

Cava then put the result beyond doubt by scoring her team's final 10 points, all in the last 1:44 of the contest.

It was an amazing performance by Cava, who went into the game on the back of four-point efforts in wins over Chile and Puerto Rico.

Argentina moved to 3-0 at the top of Group A and clinched a spot in the Semi-Finals.

They also stayed on course for a potential rematch against defending champions Brazil in the gold-medal game.

The Brazilians won their showdown two years ago and are favorites to reach the top of the podium again, which would qualify them for the London Games.

With point guard Cava on the floor for the Argentinians, however, one should never write off their chances.

They must finish second to advance to the Semi-Finals.

Should they progress, they would face Group B winners Brazil.

The Brazilians improved to 4-0 on Tuesday with an 88-61 rout of Mexico (0-3).

Erika de Souza finished with 22 points for Brazil while Alexis Castro had 18 and eight rebounds in defeat.

Jamaica suffered a 71-69 upset at the hands of Paraguay (1-2), who got 21 points from Maria Perez .

The Jamaicans (1-2) can still advance to the Semi-Finals but they must upset Canada (2-1) in their last Preliminary Round game on Wednesday and hope Paraguay fall to Mexico.

Should Canada and Jamaica finished 2-2, and Paraguay fall to Mexico, then the Jamaicans would advance by virtue of the win in their head-to-head match-up with the Canadians.

Were Paraguay to beat Mexico and Jamaica to defeat Canada, there would be a three-way tie for second place.

A goal differential tie-breaker using the scores of the games between the sides would allow the Canadians to progress.

The Canadians annihilated Paraguay 77-26 on Monday.

Puerto Rico beat Chile 64-49 in Tuesday's other game.

The defeat was third in as many outings for Chile in Colombia.FIBA
