Story Updated: Sep 15, 2011 at 12:51 AM ECT. MULTIPLE champions Cuba and the United Statres began their campaigns in grand style when the NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) Women's Continental Volleyball Championships continued Tuesday in Puerto Rico.

The Cubans, who have captured 13 of the 21 titles in the tournament which have been contested every other year since 1969, crushed Panama 25-13, 25-15, 25-7 in just an hour in Group C, while the United States, the second most successful team in the history of the tournament with five gold and 11 silver medals, faced much tougher opposition and needed an hour an a quarter to dispose of Canada 25-19, 25-19, 25-23.

Trinidad and Tobago is the other team in Group B and the three-time defending Caribbean champions needed a miracle yesterday as their only chance to make tonight's quarter-finals was to defeat the United States.

T&T already managed to break new ground on Monday's opening day when they took a set from a north American team for the first time, in going down to the Canadians in four sets.

The nine teams are in three groups and the two group winners with the best records after the round-robin phase ended last night advanced directly into tomorrow night's semi-finals. The winners of the other group and the three runners-up will play in the two quarters tonight.
