2011.09.14 - 12:04:00 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. “Narcissus”, a painting by Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio.HAVANA, Cuba.- “Narcissus”, a painting by Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the history of arts in Italy, will be exhibited in Havana from September 24 on.

The Italian ambassador to Cuba, Marco Baccin, announced during a press conference at the National Museum of Fine Arts, that that the exhibit includes another 12 paintings from the first and second generations of Caravaggio’s followers.

Caravaggio (1571-1610) was the first big exponent of the Baroque art movement, with his outstanding management of chiaroscuros. He was ahead of his time since his models were common people, even in his exceptional paintings on religious topics.

For two months the Cuban people will have the opportunity to enjoy this cultural event. This is the first time that one of Caravaggio’s paintings is exhibited in Cuba.

“Narcissus” is the last painting of the second stage of the artist in which he depicts the famous story of a boy who falls in love with his own reflection.

The “Caravaggisty” or “Caravagesques”, Caravaggio’s stylistic followers was not an homogeneous trend, on the bases of the experiences of its creators, and the paintings to be exhibited illustrate it.

The pieces come from the National Gallery of Ancient Art from the Barberini Palace and the San Silvestre Convent in the Italian capital.

The exhibit is the result of efforts by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities and the Special Superintendence for Historic, Artistic, and Ethnical Anthropological Heritage and for Museums in the city of Rome.(ACN)
