HA NOI — Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong yesterday received Jose Ramon Balaguer, special envoy of Raul Castro, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba's Central Committee.

Balaguer has arrived in Viet Nam to provide detailed information about the results of Cuba's sixth Party Congress and preparations for the upcoming national Party conference.

Trong welcomed the Cuban and said his visit was a vivid manifestation of the solidarity, traditional friendship and mutual confidence between the two Parties.

He congratulated the Communist Party of Cuba on the outcomes of its Congress, saying it was a historic and significant opportunity to orient the future of the Cuban revolution.

He said the Party and people of Viet Nam always stood side by side with the Cuban people and were determined to strengthen friendship and co-operation between the two Parties, States and peoples.

Balaguer said the Cuban national Party conference in January would adjust high-level personnel, consolidate combativeness and ensure the inheritance of the Party.

He said the sixth Party Congress adopted a roadmap to raise labour efficiency and promote production to help Cuba overcome difficulties and shortcomings.

It also took steps to protect achievements by Cuban revolutionaries during the past 50 years.

Balaguer is a member of the Secretariat and Head of the Commission for External Relations of the Communist Party of Cuba's Central Committee.

He said he was impressed by achievements of Viet Nam's modernisation process, saying that the successes would open a new stage in the national construction and defence and help Viet Nam implement its goal of "a rich people, a strong country with an equal, democratic and civilised society". They were valuable experience for Cuba to learn from.

Cuba would spare no effort to strengthen and develop the traditional, pure and faithful relations between the two Parties and countries, the special envoy said. — VNS
