Washington, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) President-elect of Peru, Ollanta Humala,raised the need to develop an open and transparent dialogue with the United States.

Humala was received on Wednesday by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, with whom he discussed aspects of bilateral relations and expressed interest in strengthening ties between the two countries.

For her part, Clinton expressed her hope to work with the new president and although she did not specify, she said they will analyze several issues.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama called for reducing drug demand in the United States as a contribution to the fight against this scourge. Peru surpassed Colombia in 2010 as the largest cocaine producer in the world and the
United States is the main market.

The politician will hold other meetings with White House officials before returning to Lima on Thursday.

This Wednesday, he also spoke with Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, as part of his visit before assuming office on July 28.

In that meeting they addressed issues of interest to the region, including the fight against organized crime and the need to strengthen respect for the Inter-American Democratic Charter, he said.
