International Convention on Environment and Development Inaugurated in Havana

2011.07.05 - 20:14:45 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu / Havana, Cuba. - The achievement of Cuba in the environmental activity were highlighted by expert Gisela Alonso Domínguez during the opening ceremony of the 8th International Convention on Environment and Development held on Monday at the Havana Convention Center with the presence commander of the Revolution and member of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Guillermo García Frías.

President of the organizing committee highlighted the institutional development, as well as the significant contribution of the results of science and techniques in the new knowledge as the main factors to enumerate the positive results during the last five decades.

“The environmental policies and tools implemented in our nation to develop its environmental police include National, Regional, Territorial and Environmental strategies, aimed at achieving actions to improve our environmental work.”Domínguez pointed out.

Some of the tangible results include the national forest area that cover up to 26,2 % of the island, as well as the record and updating process on polluting sources , as well as the efficient system designed to protect the population and economy against disasters under the direction of the Civil Defense, which is internationally recognized.

The 7th International Convention on Environment and Development takes place in the middle of difficult situations on a global scale such as the current financial, commercial, food and energetic crisis, as well as the increasing risk of the vulnerability of the human being against the natural disasters.” Moreover, we have to add the increasing number of military conflicts, the voluntarism and hegemonic position of the global powers, which are issues to be debated due to the negative impact of the wars over the nature,” Gisela Alonso affirmed.

There are 900 delegates participating in the event in representation of 35 regional countries in Havana. The convention will run until next Friday 8th and its scientist program includes 5 congresses and 3 colloquiums. (By Margarita Torres)
